Fire Feast

Food cooked on fire in front of the people who will eat it is the oldest hospitality there is. It also takes a long time, which is the point.

The day itself

You are not a guest waiting for service. Vegetables come out of the garden with you, bread goes into the embers, pots sit over the flame and are stirred by whoever is nearest.

We eat at a long table beside the fire as it gets dark, lanterns on, nobody rushing the plates away. Most of what is on the table grew within a few miles of it.

Afterwards the fire stays lit. People sit on. That last hour is usually the best part of the evening.

Rhythm of the day

  • 17:00 Garden, pick what we eat
  • 17:45 Light the fire, prepare together
  • 19:00 Long table, eat slowly
  • 21:00 Fire stays lit, sit on
  • 22:00 Close
